Nassau, The Bahamas -
The Bahamas Hot Rod
Association (BHRA) is the premier motor sports organization in The
Bahamas. It is a legal and registered group of men and women who are
dedicated
to the promotion of safe and organize racing in The Bahamas and the implementation of productive youth development programmes.
With the government
approved 50 year lease of the MotorSports Park, situate directly behind
the Aquatic Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Sports Complex, the BHRA sole
purpose is drag racing. This lease began the rebirth of Drag Racing in
The Bahamas. The new facility has undergone more than $400,000 of
improvement and renovations prior to the start of the 2009 season.
In 2003, the
Association's primary focus was safety. Executives, Directors and
Members began launching an extensive programme intended to eliminate
fans from lining the side of the track and endangering their lives. This
was accomplished primarily by installing fencing that now surrounds the
MotorSports Park. Members continued to enhance fans' safety by
installing guard rails around their seating areas. This was intended to
protect spectators from harm in the event of a run away vehicle.
Further, the Association purchased a scanner to deter the possible
criminal element from endanger
ing lives along with declaring the MotorSports Park a "bottle free zone" to ensure safety for all supporters. The presence of the Royal Bahamas Police Force on any given race
weekend also shows the importance of "safety first" not only on the track but also in the MotorSports Park itself.
BHRA members
continued its safety efforts by implementing a policy where no race
vehicles are permitted to drive on the quarter mile track without the
use of their helmet and also without the presence of an ambulance, the
safety crew, qualified emergency personnel and also the $500,000
liability insurance. This guarantees that if a fan or a driver were to
be involved in an accident while at the BHRA MotorSports Park, they
would receive immediate professional medical attention.
In an attempt to further protect race drivers, BHRA has cleared the area around the
track of all vegetation and debris and graded it so as to give our drivers a better opportunity
to gain control of their vehicles if they were to run off the track.
The Association has continued its commitment to all drivers' safety by
installing a sand pit at the end of the track to assist vehicles with
braking should a vehicle's brakes fail.
At this point BHRA is running races under a starting light referred to as a
"Christmas Tree ". This
lighting system allows workers to vacate both the starting and finish
lines areas before the beginning of each race thus removing them from
harms way. Spectators are able to see who has won the race even before
the announcer says so, from the
"Christmas Tree ". Racers are able to obtain their estimated time, miles per hour, 60-foot time and also reaction time off the starting line.
As it is outlined
"Safety First" is not only the Bahamas Hot Rod Association's Motto but
it's definitely the Association's guide.
